At 34, Selena Gomez isn’t dreading the years ahead. If anything, she’s looking forward to them. Getting older, she says, has “been so fun” — a perspective shaped by the people around her who’ve shown her how full life can become with time.

Gomez, who entered the entertainment industry at 10 on Barney & Friends, told People she doesn’t buy into the usual anxiety about aging. “I don’t feel like it’s a bad thing,” she said. “I think age is just a number in many ways.”

Part of that outlook comes from her husband, Benny Blanco. Asked what she’s learned from him, Gomez pointed to a quieter kind of confidence. “Yeah, stop overthinking and be a little bit more confident,” she said.

What she values most is that he never makes it feel like a demand. “That’s something he doesn’t pressure me to be. He just inspires me to be that,” she said.

Gomez also credited her Only Murders in the Building co-stars Steve Martin, Meryl Streep and Martin Short with having a “tremendous impact” on her outlook. She said they welcome her questions and have taught her about dignity, class and making room for ideas that can improve someone’s life.

“They all have families and they’ve lived life in a way that I never have,” Gomez said. “It makes me excited to. Maybe that’s why I’m not afraid of getting older – because people have made it look really good to me by example.”
