Bridget Jones Panicked Over 129 Pounds, and 25 Years Later Renée Zellweger Says There Was Nothing to Fix

Renée Zellweger gained about 17 pounds to play Bridget Jones for the 2001 film and, asked at the time whether Bridget was fat, said no. At a 25th-anniversary Q&A in June 2026 she put it plainly: “When people talk about her weight, there’s nothing here to fix.”
The number that opens Helen Fielding’s 1996 novel is “129 lbs. (but post-Christmas),” 9st 3lb, about 58.5 kg. Around 2000 the average UK woman weighed roughly 10st 12lb, which put Fielding’s 32-year-old singleton well below it and still panicking.
That was the joke, and Fielding has said it was built on purpose. She told the New York Post in 2001 that she never gave Bridget a height: “You know she’s not very fat, but you don’t know at all how much is in her head. That was deliberate.”
The character’s actual life rarely got the same attention. Bridget works a publicity job in publishing before moving to television, and she pays for her own place: Holland Park in the book, a flat above the Globe Tavern at Borough Market in the films.
Fielding has tied the anxiety to the decade rather than the waistline. “At that stage in the Nineties, there’d been some hideous mistake if you were 32 and you weren’t married,” she told Harper’s Bazaar in 2025.
