Ben Affleck says his refusal to wear a Yankees cap in Gone Girl took about 20 minutes to resolve. Director David Fincher’s DVD commentary turned that disagreement into a claim that production stopped for 4 days, an account Affleck disputes.

“He’s such a lying motherf*cker, that is such a f*cking lie,” Affleck said. “I do love him, and I’m friends with him, and I adore him, but he’ll f*cking lie if he thinks it will get a reaction.” He attributed the story to Fincher’s “dark sense of humor” and desire to make him suffer.

The dispute came over an airport scene in the 2014 thriller: Nick Dunne, played by Affleck, needed a cap to help him avoid being recognized. Fincher wanted a New York Yankees hat. Affleck, a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan, refused because he thought he’d never hear the end of wearing the rival team’s logo.

“The truth is, I don’t think anyone had ever said no to him about anything,” Affleck said. They settled on a New York Mets cap, which he described as “very Switzerland.” That’s the hat Nick wears in the finished film.

Affleck also joked that he didn’t even need 4 days to decide whether to appear naked in the movie, which includes a glimpse of full-frontal nudity during a shower scene. His response to that scene: “Oh f*ck it, alright.”
