When ‘The White Lotus’ Needed A Costume Choice That Signaled ‘Douchey’, Mike White Dressed the Character in a Cornell Hat

On season 1 of The White Lotus, Jake Lacy’s character, Shane Patton, is explicitly depicted as a Cornell alum. He spends his Hawaiian honeymoon pursuing a room dispute with hotel manager Armond. He’s convinced his mother booked the Pineapple Suite, and his determination to get his way shows an ugly, entitled side of his personality and strains his new marriage to Rachel.
The White Lotus creator Mike White said he chose Cornell purposely because he thought of the school’s reputation as “infamously douchey.”
Shane was written as the polished product of that kind of pipeline: money, a brand-name degree, a reflexive sense that the world owes him anything he wants to take, and almost no capacity to notice the damage he causes while insisting he’s the reasonable one. The show used Cornell as shorthand for that. Five years later the shorthand is competing with a much uglier story about what actually happens inside the social world those caps come from.
Knowing the character literally gets away with murder, Cornell’s then-president, Martha Pollack, said “Let me just say that that is not the product placement that I would’ve paid for with that character…But it’s just fiction and we’re just kind of laughing it off.”
