Shaka Zulu’s family slams Nomzamo Mbatha over ‘distorted history’ in series

Descendants of Shaka Zulu have hit out at actress, Nomzamo Mbatha accusing her of spitting on the grave of the legendary Zulu monarch’s mother, Princess Nandi, by celebrating her triumphs for portraying her on the small screen.

Last week, Mbatha went on social media to celebrate the success of Shaka Ilembe, which she starred in while also serving as a producer.

Recently, Mbatha was nominated in the Best Actress in a TV drama category at the South African Film and Television Awards. Shaka Ilembe took home the award for Best TV Drama and 11 other trophies in different categories during the ceremony.

However, her message was not received kindly by the Mhlongo family, who still maintain that the series distorts historical facts.

“Nomzamo knows very well that there’s an ongoing dispute regarding Shaka iLembe. The play was broadcast without our consent,” said spokesperson for the Mhlongo family, Mhlathuze Mhlongo.

He continued: “Our issue is that, despite having the right information, they still distorted our history. They misrepresented our culture. We were also not paid for our Intellectual property. We tried to reach out to them, but they were no longer reachable.”

Given the ongoing disputes, Mhlongo said Mbatha’s post was in bad taste.

Queen Nandi was Shaka’s mother and she was never married. What we saw on TV was a misrepresentation of facts; actually, it was an insult to Nandi and his family.

“We’re not jealous of Nomzamo, but she’s spitting on Nandi’s grave. She must just enjoy the money and keep Queen Nandi out of it; this is mockery,” fumed Mhlongo.
