South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are addressing the yearslong delay on their film collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, issuing a formal apology to their production partners as the project continues moving through Paramount. The musical comedy, currently known under the working title Whitney Springs, has been in development for years without a confirmed release timeline.

Whitney Springs is being produced at Paramount, the same studio behind South Park, with Parker and Stone working through their Park County banner. Kendrick Lamar produces alongside Dave Free through their pgLang company, putting two high-profile creative outfits behind a project that has yet to land a release date.

Parker and Stone addressed the delay directly in a statement to The Ankler. “We take full responsibility for the schedule delay of this movie,” they said. “We apologize to our partners at pgLang and Paramount, and we appreciate their patience. ‘South Park’ and life’s circumstances have gotten in the way, but we still believe in the project.” Reps for Paramount, Parker, and Stone did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for further comment.

Details on the film’s plot have shifted depending on the source. Early loglines described a Black man working as a slave reenactor at a living history museum who discovers that his white girlfriend’s family once owned his ancestors. According to The Ankler, however, the story has moved toward the reenactor clashing with a racist mayor of a Midwestern town, a role reportedly set to be played by Parker himself. The outlet also reported that Lamar has recorded several original songs for the project, tying his music career directly into the film beyond a producing credit.
