The circular vessel draws from Palomino grapes and the Andalusian landscape, extending the collection’s focus on time through design.
Mastery Beyond Reason traces the cask journey from forests and cooperages to Jerez and Speyside, spotlighting the craft behind the whisky.
The Macallan’s latest TIME : SPACE release is less interesting as a whisky launch than as a study in how material, place and time can be built into an object.
TIME : SPACE Sherry Cask continues the collection’s circular design language, first introduced around The Macallan’s 200th anniversary. The vessel is meant to reflect the continuity of past, present and future, but this edition roots that idea more specifically in Jerez de la Frontera, the southern Spanish city central to the brand’s sherry cask production.
Inside, the presentation takes cues from clusters of Palomino grapes, while warm gold tones reference the Andalusian landscape. The effect is subtle, but it gives the vessel a clearer relationship to where part of the whisky’s story begins. That connection to Jerez runs deeper with this release. TIME : SPACE Sherry Cask is the first Macallan whisky influenced by casks seasoned with sherry produced by Valdespino since the Spanish producer came under The Macallan’s ownership.
The whisky matured in predominantly European oak sherry-seasoned casks in Scotland before being married in a selection from the first 200 casks seasoned at The Macallan’s Valdespino bodega in Jerez. Those casks were produced through The Macallan’s cooperages and filled in 2024.
The larger process is traced in Mastery Beyond Reason, a new documentary narrated by photographer Steve McCurry and featuring sommelier Josep Roca. The film follows the cask from oak forests and sawmills in America and northern Spain through cooperages and bodegas in Jerez, before arriving at The Macallan Estate in Speyside. Rather than centering the finished bottle, it focuses on the network of crafts behind it, from forestry and woodworking to cooperage, sherry production and whisky making.
That shift in perspective is what makes the project more compelling from a design standpoint. The vessel looks at time through form, while the documentary traces it through labor, geography and material. Together, they frame TIME : SPACE Sherry Cask less as a standalone luxury object and more as the result of a long chain of decisions, places and specialized skills.
The release is a 20-year-old single malt Scotch whisky bottled at 44.8% ABV and marks the third chapter in The Macallan’s TIME : SPACE Collection.
