Summary

New York-based Market Gallery and Mexico City's THIRD BORN Gallery have unveiled their first collaborative exhibition

Running until November 11, the show features a multigenerational roster of 17 artists from both cities exploring the many faces of urban life through photography, sculpture, video, painting, and more

The archive is alive in till the body becomes the city, it always is* / hasta que el cuerpo se convierte en la ciudad, siempre lo es*, a new group exhibition by Market Gallery and THIRD BORN. Artists from and connected to New York and Mexico City come together in a textural, era-spanning display tracing the weight of an archive, its multiverses, and many faces.

Unfolding through the Roma Norte gallery is a visual dialogue between the two cities, threaded by observations of urban life just as shaped by narratives of debris as desire. Migration, memory, and political reality are absorbed and reimagined through the “archiving machine,” tasked with the math of a place so much greater than the sum of its parts.

The exhibition brings together 17 talents across generations and mediums, including Raeda Saadeh, Anna Bella Geiger, Ming Smith, Miguel Calderón, Silvia Gruner, Maggie Lee, and the late filmmaker Sarah Minter. It also marks the curatorial debut of Brooklyn-based photographer Zora Sicher, whose own work grapples with geographies of intimacy, contemplation, and identity.

Physical monuments and markers of memory push up against flesh and spirit. Where there is a train, for example, there is a flow of bodies and empathetic stares. “Here too persists a will to contextualize that has more to do with love than with knowledge, a will to ‘connect what cannot be connected’ but that inevitably is,” Gaby Cepeda penned in the exhibition text, quoting Hal Foster’s “An Archival Impulse.”

She continues: “An archive appears necessarily as aggregation, accumulation, a new layer that demands another one and another one in order to make sense of itself as a body, a place: a cell that engenders another, a page begets another, a concept fulfills another, the city grows and never sleeps.”
