Filmmaker Curry Barker has officially debuted his new horror short film Mama Bear, marking his first directorial release since his breakout box-office phenomenon Obsession. The surprise project premiered exclusively on YouTube in partnership with Windows just in time for Halloween.

The short film arrives on the heels of the historic theatrical run of Obsession, which grossed $519 million USD worldwide on a sub-$1 million USD production budget. Audiences quickly drew thematic connections between the title of ‘Mama Bear’ and Barker’s debut feature, referencing the lead character Bear (portrayed by Michael Johnston) and co-star Inde Navarrette, who earned critical acclaim and Oscar buzz before joining Marvel’s X-Men reboot as Rogue.

Following the success of Obsession, Barker secured an eight-figure deal with Universal and Blumhouse and is currently readying his upcoming horror-comedy feature, Anything But Ghosts, scheduled to hit theaters on May 7, 2027, through Focus Features and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. Co-written with and starring longtime collaborator Cooper Tomlinson alongside Aaron Paul, Bryce Dallas Howard, Violet McGraw, and Chris Reinacher, the project follows amateur paranormal investigators.

Curry Barker’s Mama Bear is currently available to stream exclusively on YouTube.
