What stories lie behind some of fashion’s most recognizable objects? Hermès is inviting audiences to uncover the history, craftsmanship and creative spirit of the French luxury house through HERMÈSTORIES, an immersive exhibition and theatrical experience at Freespace in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District. Running from October 24 to November 8, 2026, the limited-time presentation offers an unconventional exploration of the maison’s nearly two-century legacy, combining an imaginative exhibition with a surrealist stage production. Founded in 1837 as a Parisian saddlery and harness-making workshop, Hermès has since evolved into a luxury house spanning 16 métiers, encompassing leather goods, silk, ready-to-wear and accessories. Rather than approaching this history through a conventional retrospective, HERMÈSTORIES celebrates the anecdotes, creative encounters and artisanal traditions that have shaped the house and its most recognizable creations.
Conceived as a theatrical storeroom, the accompanying exhibition offers visitors an intimate encounter with the objects and craftsmanship that define Hermès’ identity. The installation invites audiences to wander among iconic creations, discovering their histories, construction and artistic significance through an imaginative presentation that blurs the boundaries between exhibition and stage design. From the house’s leatherworking expertise and its celebrated Kelly and Birkin bags to the vibrant silk scarves rooted in its equestrian heritage, the exhibition highlights the breadth of Hermès’ 16 métiers and the creative ingenuity behind its enduring designs. Beyond showcasing these objects, the experience explores the relationship between functionality, material innovation and artistic expression, offering a closer look at how generations of artisans and designers have continued to reinterpret the maison’s heritage.
Bringing these stories to life through performance, the theatrical component of HERMÈSTORIES is written by Pauline Bayle and directed by Joe Hufton. At its center is Lad, a waiting groom portrayed by a young woman, who embarks on an imaginative late-afternoon journey along Paris’ rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré, home to Hermès’ historic flagship. Accompanied by a narrator and an eccentric cast of characters, Lad encounters a series of unexpected scenarios that transport the audience from the maison’s storied Parisian address to a surreal window display in the middle of a desert.
The performance unfolds through witty exchanges, poetic songs and inventive stagecraft, with a Foley artist producing live sound effects using Hermès materials and gestures associated with its craftsmanship. Throughout the journey, recognizable house signatures, including silk scarves, the iconic orange box, zippers and the Bolide bag, become playful storytelling elements, illustrating how the maison’s creative identity continues to evolve while remaining connected to its heritage.
HERMÈSTORIES is open to the public at Freespace, West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong, until November 8, 2026. Admission is free with advance registration through the official Hermès website at hermes.com/stories.
