Timothée Chalamet Makes a Final Push for ‘Marty Supreme’: ‘This Is the One, Man’
· Rolling StoneWe’re only a week away from Marty Supreme and Timothée Chalamet is continuing to go hard with his over-the-top promotional push for the film. Last night, the actor appeared on The Tonight Show to discuss the movie and to play beer pong with host Jimmy Fallon.
“I think [this is] one of the best marketing campaigns of any film I’ve ever seen,” Fallon noted. “You’ve done a fantastic job with this movie.”
“Ultimately, this is an original film, Marty Supreme,” Chalamet explained. “It’s an independent A24 film. I know people rag on the budget size. But this is the easiest sell for me to come here. I’m trying to talk straight into America right here.”
He looked directly into one of the cameras, adding, “This is a movie about sacrifice in pursuit of a dream. And it’s something I can relate to deeply. And we live in a bleak time, especially for young people, so this film is an attempted antidote to that. And to continue to believe in yourself and to continue to dream big and to follow your dreams and not take no for an answer. That’s the spirit of Marty Supreme, out on Christmas Day.”
The actor said he wasn’t sure if he should go so “hard” with his pitch, but he feels that strongly about the movie. “I’m been a part of a lot of projects I’m very proud of,” he said. “This is the one, man. Marty Supreme is the one.”
Chalamet recounted his extensive ping pong preparation for the film, noting that it was a “six or seven year training process.” He first met with director Josh Safdie in 2018. “I like to learn by osmosis,” the actor said, explaining that he didn’t necessarily train every day. But because he’s getting the opportunity to work he feels he should go “10,000 percent hard.”
“And this movie is the manifestation that,” he said. “This is that movie, man. Everyone went super hard.” He added, of people seeing the film, “I don’t think you’re going to regret it.”
Chalamet also joined Fallon for a round of beer pong, using orange balls of course. Chalamet missed his first and second shots, but picked up momentum as the game went on. Fallon ultimately took the victory as Chalamet moaned, “I lost. I lost.”

Chalamet has been on a promotional rampage for Marty Supreme, which hits theaters on Dec. 25. Last month, he shared an 18-minute Zoom video featuring the “marketing team” for the film. During the clip, he shared his ideas for, as he put it, “one of the most important things that happens on Planet Earth this year. Marty Supreme. Christmas Day.”

His ideas included painting landmarks — such as the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower — in Marty Supreme orange and flying a blimp over Marty Supreme co-star Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival.
“We should have the blimp go above Flog Gnaw and rain ping-pong balls, Marty Supreme-branded, rain ping-pong balls on everyone,” he proposed. When one of the marketers mentioned it might be a safety hazard, Chalamet acknowledged the danger. “I don’t want to put anybody in an unsafe condition, but I don’t want to be too safe about putting out this movie.” He adds: “If it’s the difference between, you know what I mean, someone losing an arm putting out the movie, but someone gaining an arm intellectually when they see it, I’m a fan of the latter.”
