Jamie xx Gets the Band Back Together on ‘Waited All Night,’ Featuring the xx’s Romy and Oliver Sim

· Rolling Stone

Jamie xx has orchestrated a mini-reunion of the xx, tapping bandmates Romy and Oliver Sim for his latest single, “Waited All Night.”

The track marks the first time all three musicians have appeared on the same record since the xx’s 2017 album, See You. The single’s official release comes after the trio performed the track live during Jamie’s set at Glastonbury earlier this summer.

In a statement, Jamie thanked his “two best friends and musical siblings” for joining him on the giddy two-step gem. “It’s wonderful to have the gang back together, working in new ways, working out new lives, I wouldn’t be here without them.”

Romy and Sim added, “We’ve loved collaborating on our recent solo projects but it’s been a while since the three of us came together on one track. We’re so pleased that this was the place we met up again. Proud to play a small part in this long awaited, brilliant album. We’re your biggest fans Jamie!”

“Waited All Night” will appear on Jamie xx’s upcoming solo album, In Waves, which is set to drop this Friday, Sept. 20. Jamie has trickled out a bunch of music in the lead-up to the album, including “Treat Each Other Right,” “All You Children” with the Avalanches, and “Life” with Robyn. Other guests on the album include Honey Dijon, Kelsey Lu, John Glacier, Panda Bear, and Oona Doherty. (Jamie also dropped a few stand-alone singles earlier this year, like “Let’s Do It Again,” which will appear on the deluxe vinyl edition of In Waves.)

In Waves marks Jamie xx’s second solo album and first in nearly 10 years, following 2015’s In Colour. Both Romy and Sim have released solo albums of their own recently, too, with Sim’s Hideous Bastard dropping in 2022 and Romy’s Mid Air arriving last year.
