Adrian Young’s New Snare Drum Collab Was Inspired by No Doubt’s ‘Tragic Kingdom’ Era
· Rolling StoneIt’s been a busy few months for No Doubt drummer Adrian Young, who kicked off a headlining run at Sphere Las Vegas with the band in early May, and helped to revive the Orange County Drum & Percussion brand (OCDP) in April.
Now Young is adding drum designer to his resume, with the launch of a limited-edition snare drum with original OCDP founder Daniel Jensen.
Available now at Guitar Center, the “Custom Adrian Young Signature Snare Drum” features a newly-designed drum inspired by the Grammy winner’s playing style and “tonal preferences” while taking aesthetic cues from No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom era, and the Southern California rock and ska scene of the late Nineties.

Made in the USA, the new snare drum features OCDP’s signature bold styling against an eight-ply maple shell, custom chrome hardware and a “tangerine sparkle” finish, said to be inspired by Young’s original Tragic Kingdom touring kit.
The drummer helped to tune the instrument too, creating a single, two-inch vent configuration for “added crack, projection, and responsiveness,” while adding taller and “beefier hoops for stronger rimshots.” OCDP shark tooth lugs help support even tension and stable tuning.
In a press release, Guitar Center says the Adrian Young signature snare drum reflects the “focused attack, controlled response, and dependable feel that continue to shape Young’s playing style on stage and in the studio. Combining classic OCDP styling with balanced maple warmth and articulate projection, this signature snare captures the energy and personality that helped make Adrian Young one of the most recognizable drummers of alternative rock’s modern era.”
“OCDP believed in me early on, and that relationship has really come full circle with this release,” Young says, adding that he was “hands-ons” in designing this snare, and that “a lot of the details are personal to me.”
To wit: “The orange sparkle wrap is a throwback to my Tragic Kingdom touring kit. We also made the hoop taller and beefier, with a vintage flange which is great for rim shots,” he explains. “I’ve played vented snares before, but never with a single two-inch vent like this which adds some additional crack, and volume. It’s built to reflect how I play today while staying true to what made OCDP different from the start.”
Young’s new release comes on the heels of OCDP’s 35th anniversary relaunch, with Guitar Center helping to bring the beloved percussion brand back to the masses.
