Matt Damon revealed in a new interview that his wife suffered a brain aneurysm weeks before the 2024 Oscars.

Reflecting on the 20th anniversary of The Departed in a GQ interview, Damon — who was not nominated for that Martin Scorsese film — said he wanted attend the Academy Awards in 2007 to witness Scorsese get his first Oscar, but he was shooting The Bourne Ultimatum. Similarly, with Oppenheimer favored at the 2024 Oscars, Damon was eager to join the cast and crew of the Christopher Nolan film at the ceremony.

However, a week before those Oscars, “We had this whole scary thing happen where my wife had a brain aneurysm,” Damon revealed. “She’s totally fine, thank God, but [she] had this brain surgery the week before the Oscars.”

The actor has been married to his wife Luciana since 2005, and they share three children together. A week after Luciana’s surgery, the Damons attended a Vanity Fair post-Oscars party to celebrate Oppenheimer’s Best Picture win, one of seven Academy Awards the film took home.

“It was the first night she felt good enough to get up and had her energy back,” Damon added. “And she surprised me and got a dress and we went out to the after-party, because she remembered that the last time it happened, I didn’t do it. And she was like, ‘This time we’re going out.’ And it was pretty fucking heroic of her to do that and really meaningful.”

The Damons will likely return to the Oscars next year as the actor will (likely) be among the nominees for Best Actor for The Odyssey.
