‘Señora Presidenta’: Kamala Harris Gets the Corrido Treatment by La Original Banda el Limón

La Original Banda el Limón has recorded a corrido in honor of Kamala Harris. On Thursday, the band premiered the song, titled “Señora Presidenta,” with Rolling Stone, which hears the band endorsing Harris’ ticket and honoring her “humble origins” and her immigrant background.

“We are honored to release this corrido — not just in support of Vice President Harris — but as an ode to our community,” Juan Barboza, Banda el Limón’s leader, tells Rolling Stone. “Our culture, traditions and music are beautiful and powerful just like our community.”

“We hope that in these final moments, the song inspires our community to embrace our strength and together to show up in a critical moment,” he adds. “This song reflects the values of our community and our vision for a future where people matter.”

On the song, Barboza tells the story of Harris’ rise in politics while manifesting her winning the presidential election. “We admire you for who you are, an incredible leader,” Banda el Limón sings over horns and tuba. “She’s been fighting for a future and is for the people.”

“Señora Presidenta” is a testament to how much music and entertainment have played a role in this year’s election, especially as it pertains to Latino voters. Earlier this month, Alejandro Fernández, Tigres Del Norte, Chiquis and 23 other Latin stars released a powerful statement condemning Trump’s attacks on immigrants, just weeks after Puerto Rican reggaeton stars Anuel AA and Nicky Jam publicly endorsed Trump’s presidency.

Other political non-profits have used music to encourage Latino voters to head to the polls. The organization Grita Canta Vota has hosted music festivals in swing states all month — including one in Las Vegas Wednesday with Lupita Infanta, Grupo Control, and T3r Elemnto — to boost voter registration in key locations.

For generations, corridos have been a classic, Mexican way of spreading information and storytelling — and during this election, it’s been no exception. Accordionist Compa Camaney went viral on TikTok over the summer for composing a corrido about Trump’s assassination attempt.
