The excitement was palpable among the 4000 women at the start line of Nike’s “After Dark” race, a 10-kilometre run held in April under the neon lights of Shanghai’s premier shopping street.

The biggest brand in sport had whipped up some pre-race buzz by enlisting Chinese athletes to participate, including two-time grand slam tennis champion Li Na.
