Michael Hasten points to a photo on his phone of his nine-year-old daughter, Maya, cradling a rabbit at a Bondi Beach petting zoo. Taken at 6.38pm during a Hanukkah celebration on Sunday, the image captures a moment minutes before the shooting began.
“That’s at the petting zoo, where most of the people died, and we were split up as a family,” Hasten says. “She put the rabbit down when the shooting started and hid under the car ... that’s what saved her.”
