How to fight back against ‘tip entitlement’

On checking out of a California hotel recently, I was simultaneously presented with the bill and this question: “Would you like me to add a tip for housekeeping to your account?”

I looked up to confirm it was a serious question (it was), then took a breath and replied: “So, out of the $700 I just paid for the room, are you saying the hotel can’t afford to pay its housekeeping staff to clean it?” Clever response, right? Well no, because in the shock of the moment, I didn’t actually say that. I wimped out and said: “Yeah, sure, go ahead.”
