They descended on the courthouse in Reno on Tuesday morning Australian time in competing packs of Chevy Suburbans – the big blacked out SUVs that are the marker for power and money in the US.

The Murdochs were in sombre mode. As appearances go, they might as well have come straight from the set of Succession, the HBO series modelled in part on Rupert and his unhappy progeny, as they prepared for the legal battle over future control of the Murdoch family trust.
