Do non-alcoholic beverages really limit your booze intake?

In 1979, the British government became increasingly concerned about the public health risks posed by alcohol. Taking action, they released new medical recommendations as part of a national campaign. Men, they advised, should not drink more than 56 standard drinks a week. That’s the equivalent of necking two bottles of whisky.

It’s a sign of just how radically the health advice surrounding alcohol has changed in the intervening years. Today, the British government has slashed its weekly guidelines to 14 units, matching a similar downward trend in Australia.
