The neighbours fought this Palm Beach luxury hotel. Now they love it

It is early on a weeknight, and the dining room of Coco’s is humming with an insular, in-the-know energy. Champagne flutes clink against crystal tumblers. Bartenders thrust cocktail shakers like maracas. And the chatter of mature-age double dates and polite gossip whirrs around the chic restaurant at The Vineta, a three-level, 41-room luxury hotel in a residential street of Palm Beach, Florida.

While the hotel guests have a preppy vibe, the dining room is full of old-money glamourpusses from the island neighbourhood. Men in jewel-toned polo shirts and chinos, or lightweight tweed suit jackets for the older set, with women in vibrant, floral linens or cropped blazers, their wrists and necklines dripping in gold.
