Where have all the good protest songs gone?

Bruce Springsteen’s fans are well-used to their idol shuffling his set list around whenever he feels like it. The Boss’s legendarily sprawling, three-hour-plus shows usually include his biggest hits, a surprising deep cut or two for the die-hards, and perhaps a city-specific cover to charm the locals (Can’t Buy Me Love in Liverpool, say).
But how he starts, how he ends, and how he orders his gigs can change as often as the tides. So it was last month, when Springsteen kicked off his Land of Hopes and Dreams American Tour in Minneapolis. He had a new set list for a new year, and a new message for the nation.
