In 1994, the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences faced what consultants like to call a quality problem: at least four of the five nominees for the Oscar for best picture were bona fide classics.

There was the Tom Hanks history vehicle Forrest Gump. There was Quentin Tarantino’s blockbuster Pulp Fiction, the prison drama The Shawshank Redemption, the critically acclaimed Quiz Show, and the movie that made Hugh Grant’s career, Four Weddings and a Funeral.
