The hidden Mediterranean beach where cows outnumber people

My trip to Girolata Beach is nothing short of magical. This is partly because I’ve done no research whatsoever, but even without the element of surprise, it would be difficult not to fall under its spell. Horned cows wander unchecked along the sand, sniffing quad bikes with curiosity. Red rocks offer a startling contrast with not just the sea, but the smudge of cream which is the first thing I spot on the horizon as I approach. Not the sand, which is rust-coloured, but a fairy-tale fort on the headland at the western end of the beach.
Corsica has more than 960 kilometres of coastline. That’s a lot of beaches, and many are spectacular – with the kind of sieved, golden sand you see on computer screensavers. Girolata, with its volcanic powder and skinny cows, might not be the prettiest, but it’s one of the most beguiling.
