The quintessential Kenyan safari gets a five-star reboot

Abdul Karim, the chief guide at Kitirua Plains Lodge, points and our vehicle slows to a halt. From these moments, we’ve come to expect hyenas, elephants or perhaps cubs clambering over a lioness as she sleeps in the sun. Instead, he is gesturing to an enormous umbrella acacia, its shape neatly pruned by nature’s own hedge trimmers: giraffe. Beyond stretches the dusty plain, with Mount Kilimanjaro rising in the distance, its snow-capped peak seemingly floating above the haze.
“This is where Geoffrey Kent set up his first mobile camp,” he says, almost reverentially. We’re in Amboseli in southern Kenya, near the border with Tanzania, and a little piece of safari history is sitting just before us.
