Step inside Melbourne’s most desirable mid-century homes

When architect Rachel Hurst and her accountant husband Richard Wharldall decided to move from Adelaide to Melbourne, they originally thought to settle in the northern suburbs of Carlton or Fitzroy. Then, one day, they strayed into the lush gullies of Studley Park, which lead down to the Yarra River as it meanders its way through tranquil Kew.
“You go through grungy old Abbotsford, cross the river and suddenly it’s like being in a forest setting,” she says. In between the lush greenery, extraordinary mid-century modern houses by architects including Robin Boyd, Anatol Kagan and Peter McIntyre pop up like exotic beasts.
