21 Savage Warned Drake Not To Beef With Kendrick Lamar

by · Genius

21 Savage returned today with WHAT HAPPENED TO THE STREETS?, his fourth studio album, and the track gaining the most attention so far is ”MR RECOUP,” featuring Drake. 21 and Drizzy have been buddies for years, and appearing last night on the Perspektives with Bank podcast, 21 revealed that he told Drake not to beef with Kendrick Lamar after the Compton rapper dissed him on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That” in 2024. Drake, of course, did not take his advice.

“He called me one of them days, or I called him—this was after the first song, the song with Metro and them,” 21 told Bank. I said, ‘Goddamn, you finna go into a battle that you can’t win. Like, there’s no way you can win. No matter what, bro, certain situations, even if you win, you still don’t win.”

21’s point was that Drake—one of the most-streamed artists in the world—had nothing to gain by engaging with Kung-Fu Kenny.

“People say Kendrick won,” 21 said. “Kendrick a good-ass rapper, though. And some of his songs was hard. But I like Drake’s songs, too. I feel like the only difference is, when you’re on top, when you’re the No. 1 nigga, where does winning put you? You can’t go, like, No. 1.1. So how the fuck could you win anyway?”

Ultimately, 21 believes it all game down to ego, the downfall of many a great man.

“It’s definitely ego,” he said. “And Drake really loves this shit. And Kendrick really loves to rap. I don’t really give a fuck about rapping like that. Like, I do, but I don’t at the same time … A nigga dissing me ain’t gonna inspire me to make no song. I wanna do something else to your ass.”
