J. Cole Shares Tracklist For ‘The Fall-Off,’ Reveals Concept Behind The Double Album
by Ken Partridge · GeniusOn Friday, J. Cole will release his long-awaited seventh studio album, The Fall-Off, and today, he’s shared the tracklist and revealed the concept behind the project. As fans had speculated, The Fall-Off is a double album, and it’s broken into two distinct parts: “Disc 29” and “Disc 39.” Those numbers correspond to different ages in Cole’s life and trips he took back home to Fayetteville, North Carolina, at those times.
“Disc 29 tells a story of me returning to my hometown at age 29,” Cole explains in an Instagram statement. “A decade after moving to New York, accomplishing what would have seemed impossible to most, I was at a crossroads with the 3 loves of my life; my woman, my craft, and my city.”
Meanwhile, “Disc 39” highlights Cole’s state of mind during a trip home a decade later, when he was “older and a little closer to peace.” Cole says The Fall-Off—which was “made with the intentions” to be his final album—completes a circle he began with his 2007 debut mixtape, The Come-Up, which was all about venturing north to New York City with dreams of becoming a rapper.
“When you listen to that project you hear a college kid with a real sharp pen, telling the world how he’s going to make it and proudly put his unknown city on the map in the process,” he writes of The Come-Up.
In his Instagram post, Cole also shares that he took the photos used on the album’s front and back covers. The one on the back shows his bedroom when he was 15.
