“Golden,” the chart-topping anthem from KPop Demon Hunters, has won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The victory marked the first-ever Oscar victory for a K-pop song. Written by EJAE, Mark Sonnenblick, Joong Gyu Kwak, Yu Han Lee, Hee Dong Nam, 24, and Teddy Park and performed by the fictional trio HUNTR/X in the smash Netflix animated film, “Golden” also picked up the Golden Globe in the same category back in January.

“Thank you to the Academy for this insane award,” Ejae said in her acceptance speech, fighting back tears. “Growing up, people made fun of me for liking K-pop, but now everyone’s singing our song and all the Korean lyrics. I’m so proud. And I realized, like the song, this award is not about success; it’s about resilience, and I’m just so grateful to our team.”

Unfortunately, the orchestra played the winners off the stage just as Yu Han Lee began to speak. In the press room later in the evening, co-writer Mark Sonnenblick said a few more thank-yous and touched on the important meaning of “Golden,” as EW reports.

“Part of the movie is about looking at someone that you had been taught to hate and to fear, and starting to trust, [or] maybe, you know, love them,” he said.
