Actor Sunny Deol has revealed that he spent years trying to bring Damini 2 to the screen, but the sequel never materialised. Speaking at the trailer launch of his upcoming courtroom drama Ikka, the actor said the film arrived at the right time, giving him the chance to return to the courtroom decades after his acclaimed performance in Damini.
The actor said he had not found another courtroom drama after Damini and had long hoped to revisit the genre through a sequel. However, when those plans failed to move forward, Ikka became the project that finally brought him back to playing a lawyer. His remarks have renewed interest in the unmade sequel to one of Bollywood's most celebrated legal dramas.
Why did Damini 2 never happen?
Released in 1993, Damini remains one of Bollywood's most iconic courtroom dramas. The film earned Sunny Deol the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and gave Hindi cinema one of its most memorable dialogues, "Tarikh pe tarikh" (dates after dates), which continues to resonate with audiences even today.
Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Sunny said, "Definitely, mujhe Damini ke baad mauka nahi mila aur jaise hi ye subject mere paas aaya main khush tha ki hum itna koshish kar rahe thhe Damini 2 karne ka, but Damini 2 ka toh kuch hua nahi." (Definitely, I didn't get an opportunity after Damini, and when this subject came my way, I was happy, especially since we had been trying so hard to make Damini 2, though nothing ever came of that) He added that he was pleased when Ikka came his way because it allowed him to revisit a genre he has always enjoyed.
What did Sunny Deol say about reuniting with Akshaye Khanna?
Sunny also spoke about sharing screen space once again with Akshaye Khanna, whom he first worked with in Border. He recalled enjoying their collaboration on the 1997 war drama and said working together again on Ikka had been equally rewarding.
He joked about Akshaye's reserved personality, saying, "I have known him for so many years, and wo mujhse jyaada aloof hain," (he is more aloof than I am) before laughing. In Ikka, Sunny plays a lawyer defending Akshaye Khanna's character in a case that carries significant consequences.
What is Ikka about?
Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra, who previously directed Maharaj, Ikka marks Sunny Deol's return to the courtroom in a role that has drawn comparisons with his performance in Damini. The trailer shows him preparing to fight a crucial legal battle while defending Akshaye Khanna's character.
Written by Althea Kaushal and Mayank Tewari, the film also stars Dia Mirza, Tillotama Shome, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Shishir Sharma and Akansha Ranjan.
Ikka is set to premiere on Netflix on July 10.
