The Last Tenant, starring Irrfan Khan and Vidya Balan, was released on YouTube on the actor’s sixth death anniversary. The film, shot nearly 25 years ago, features early performances by both actors and was restored before being made available as a tribute.

The film, completed in 2000, was released on the YouTube page of The Salt Inc on April 29, marking a remembrance of Irrfan.

Written and directed by Sarthak Dasgupta and produced by Neena and Sarthak Dasgupta, the film captures a young Irrfan alongside Vidya Balan. It is believed to be among Vidya’s earliest works - possibly her first film after television and remains their only on-screen collaboration.

Despite being completed over two decades ago, The Last Tenant was not released earlier due to the loss of its original footage. The project remained shelved for years until a VHS copy was recovered, allowing it to be restored and released.

The film also marks Sarthak’s directorial debut, made after he quit his corporate career post his engineering and MBA. He later went on to create projects like Music Teacher, 200 Halla Ho, and the web series Dharavi Bank.

Released under his banner, The Salt Inc, the film has garnered close to two lakh views within three days of its release.

Irrfan died on April 29, 2020, at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital after battling cancer.
