Actor Sreeleela has found herself at the centre of a social media storm after her comments on menstruation sparked widespread backlash. The remarks were made during the success meet of Ustaad Bhagat Singh held in March after the film's release, where she spoke about her personal experiences as a working woman.

During the interaction, Sreeleela said that she has continued working even during her periods and believes that physiological and psychological barriers should not be used as excuses. Her statement, which was uploaded on the Sitha mobile app’s social media page, resurfaced and began drawing strong reactions online. The post has now been deleted.

Sreeleela said, “All of my songs, I can say, most of them at least have been appreciated. I have shot while I have been on my period, so that is not an excuse anywhere. When we want things in power, when we say we want things equally, I feel we have to push beyond physiological barriers. So psychological, physiological, all of this is not an excuse.”

Several users pointed out that menstrual experiences vary significantly from person to person. While some individuals face mild discomfort, others deal with severe pain that can disrupt daily activities. Many also highlighted conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which can make menstruation particularly challenging.

Criticism intensified due to Sreeleela’s medical background, with many expressing concern that such a generalised statement overlooked the complexities of women’s health. Social media users shared personal accounts of dealing with debilitating cramps, fatigue, and hormonal imbalances, urging for greater sensitivity and awareness.

The conversation soon evolved into a broader discussion on workplace expectations and the need to acknowledge diverse health experiences. Many emphasised that dismissing menstrual pain could contribute to unrealistic standards and a lack of support for women.

On the work front, Sreeleela is set to make her Bollywood debut in a film directed by Anurag Basu, where she will star alongside Kartik Aaryan. Additionally, she is part of an upcoming Tamil project with Dhanush, tentatively titled D55. Directed by Amaran fame Rajkumar Periasamy, the film also stars Mammootty and Sai Pallavi in prominent roles.
