Actor Tom Holland has revealed the behind-the-scenes scheduling conflict that led to the delay of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The actor said he was already preparing to return as Peter Parker when he received an offer to star in Christopher Nolan's upcoming epic The Odyssey, with both productions set to begin filming at the same time.
The overlap left Holland facing a difficult decision. Speaking to GQ, the actor explained that he had to approach Sony Pictures and request a change to the production schedule for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. According to Holland, the studio ultimately agreed to move the film's timeline, allowing him to take on Nolan's project without stepping away from Marvel's next Spider-Man instalment.
Why Was Spider-Man: Brand New Day Delayed?
Holland said the clash between the two major productions forced him into what he described as an "uncomfortable conversation" with Sony.
"So I said to Chris, like, 'Look, I want to do this movie, but if I'm going to do it, I'm going to have to call Sony and have a very uncomfortable conversation'," Holland told GQ.
The actor added that Sony's confidence in Nolan's ability to keep productions on schedule played a key role in the decision. Holland suggested the outcome may have been different had the project been led by another filmmaker.
How Did The Delay Benefit The Film?
According to Holland, the postponement proved beneficial for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The extra time allowed the team to bring filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton on board as director and refine the screenplay.
Holland said the additional months gave the filmmakers an opportunity to strengthen the story, adding that the final version of the film is better because of the delay.
When Will Tom Holland Return As Spider-Man?
Before swinging back into the Marvel universe, Holland will appear in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on July 17. The film follows Odysseus' perilous journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War.
Two weeks later, Holland will reprise his role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, slated for release on July 31. The film picks up after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where the world forgot Peter Parker's identity. The cast includes Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal.
