  • Vijay may personally refund distributors if Jana Nayagan's certification delay continues
  • Film awaits CBFC certificate, possibly releasing late June or early July
  • Distributors to get refunds amid ongoing uncertainty, per KVN Productions

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay is reportedly exploring a last-ditch solution to end the prolonged uncertainty surrounding his final film, Jana Nayagan. According to reports, the actor is willing to personally compensate distributors if the film continues to remain stuck in certification limbo with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The latest development comes as the makers await clarity from the censor board. Various reports suggest the team is currently in New Delhi in a final attempt to secure the film's long-pending certificate. If the process is completed soon, Jana Nayagan could finally arrive in theatres towards the last week of June or the first week of July.

Vijay's reported rescue plan

What makes the situation unusual is Vijay's reported willingness to absorb some of the financial burden caused by the delay. During one of the court hearings, the counsel representing the production house said that Jana Nayagan was made on a budget of nearly Rs 500 crore. With the mounting interest and uncertainty surrounding the release, the production house is experiencing enormous financial strain.

According to recent reports, the actor is prepared to refund distributors from his own pocket if the certification issue remains unresolved. He is also said to be willing to safeguard KVN Productions' investment in the project.

While there has been no official confirmation from Vijay's team, the reported move highlights the immense pressure surrounding the release of a film that was originally expected to hit screens in January.

Why are distributors to be refunded?

The latest reports come a week after KVN Productions confirmed that it had decided to refund distributor advances due to the uncertainty surrounding the release.

Speaking to SCREEN, Mohan Suprith, Business Head of KVN Productions, said, "While we are still in talks, we have decided to refund the money to the film distributors. We felt it was unfair to keep them in loop, while we are still waiting for a possible release date."

The decision was reportedly taken at Vijay's insistence, as the film's release timeline remained unclear.

How Jana Nayagan got stuck in censor limbo

Jana Nayagan was originally scheduled to release on January 9. However, the film ran into trouble after the board members flagged certain scenes which could potentially hurt public sentiments. It was also reported that certain dialogues and scenes had political undertones that could help Vijay and his party in the recently concluded Assembly Elections.

The CBFC's regional panel reportedly recommended a UA 16+ certificate initially, but the final clearance process was stalled after a member filed an internal complaint. In response, KVN Productions approached the Madras High Court seeking intervention to expedite certification ahead of release.

A single judge initially passed an order favourable to the makers. However, the CBFC challenged the ruling before a division bench of the Madras High Court, which stayed the order on January 9 - the very day the film was scheduled to release. The certification process effectively returned to square one.

After a month-long battle, the producers withdrew their writ petition and opted to pursue the CBFC's standard certification process instead. The film was later screened to the Revising Committee, but a final certificate is yet to be issued.

Rs 100 crore loss?

The prolonged delay has had major financial consequences. Industry estimates suggest distributors worldwide have collectively absorbed losses of nearly Rs 100 crore, largely due to mounting interest costs on investments tied to the film.

Theatre owners were also impacted during the Pongal season, with Jana Nayagan's absence leaving a significant gap at the box office. Overseas distributors, including UK-based Ahimsa and Boleyn, were forced to refund nearly Rs 8 crore in advance bookings after the January release was cancelled.

The film's non-theatrical rights agreements are also believed to have been affected by the delay, adding further pressure on the producers.

Directed by H Vinoth and produced by Venkat K Narayana under KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan stars Vijay, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani and Narain. The music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
