This year's Met Gala debutants from India included Ananya Birla, and she made sure to deliver a bold moment in a couture look by Robert Wun, paired with Subodh Gupta's metallic facepiece. It would not be wrong to say that her look was a striking blend of sharp tailoring and dramatic volume, giving classic couture a powerful and modern edge.
Birla wore a structured black blazer with a cinched waist and a sculptural peplum, creating a strong, architectural silhouette. The fitted bodice flowed into a voluminous, floor-length pleated skirt, bringing movement and grandeur to the look.
Her accessories elevated the outfit without overwhelming it. A statement diamond choker sat elegantly at the neck, while her hair was styled in soft, loose waves and the makeup was kept minimal.
The businesswoman's look for the event was styled by Rhea Kapoor. Sharing details on social media, Kapoor explained that using his signature stainless steel, Gupta crafted a piece that acts both as a disguise, obscuring the wearer's identity, and as a visage of foreboding strength.
"The work sends mixed signals: the wearer who dons this piece becomes a superhero, yet one who emerges from the humble beginnings of the common household."
Extending this idea, Wun reinterpreted the codes of everyday workwear, pushing the ordinary into the realm of the extraordinary.
Meanwhile, this year, the theme for the Met Gala exhibition is "Costume Art," and the dress code for the gala is "Fashion Is Art." Held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Met Gala takes place every year on the first Monday of May.
Among the other attendees from India are Isha Ambani, Karan Johar, Manish Malhotra, Natasha Poonawalla, Sudha Reddy, and more.
