After reports claimed that he had become a US citizen, actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh on Monday responded to a fan's question about getting a Green Card. During a recent live interaction, he reacted with humour but did not directly confirm or deny the claim.
In the same live session, the 42-year-old also addressed questions about his latest film Satluj and why it was released on ZEE5 instead of in theatres or on another streaming platform.
During the interaction, Diljit said, "I'll take a card and colour it green. I'm not saying anything. Sab chhodke ye news ban jayegi. It is not possible to happen like this; it will never happen. The drama of the world will never end, but I say all... Everyone should be allowed to go to any country without a visa. The whole world should become one. I am fine, but it is not possible like this, is it? (sic)"
Earlier, a report by The Indian Express had said that Diljit acquired US citizenship in 2022, had been travelling on a US passport since then, and had entered India on an e-visa since September 2022. The report also said he had not publicly spoken about giving up Indian citizenship or taking US nationality.
What did Diljit say about Satluj?
Speaking in Punjabi about Satluj, he said, "Till yesterday, I was not even allowed to talk about the film with anyone. The film was directly released on the platform with no promotion whatsoever. Does this ever happen? The whole team worked so hard on the film."
He added that there were many things he wanted to say but could not. He also thanked viewers for their support and said he had seen the videos, edits and posts shared by fans on social media.
Reflecting on the real-life events behind the film, Diljit said the incident took place in 1995, when people were allegedly not allowed to speak about it. He said the same situation continued even now and called it deeply upsetting. He also said it saddened him that, even in 2026, little had changed.
Diljit also spoke about the delays the project faced over the years. He said the film's shoot was stalled for 10 to 15 years. He said it took another one-and-a-half years for production to begin, and that after editing, the project remained stuck for four more years. Diljit said he was associated with the film for two years, while director Honey Trehan spent six years bringing it to life.
More about the film
Directed by Honey Trehan, Satluj was earlier titled Punjab '95. The film is based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, who investigated the alleged cremation of thousands of unidentified bodies in Punjab between 1984 and 1994. The film was submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in 2022 but did not receive a clearance certificate. The filmmakers had earlier alleged that the CBFC had sought 127 cuts.
The film was also scheduled to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023, but the screening was cancelled after objections were reportedly raised by Indian authorities. After years of delays, Satluj finally premiered on ZEE5 on July 3 without any promotional campaign. However, it was removed from the platform two days later without prior notice. ZEE5 later said it stood by the film and its creative vision, but added that, "in light of current developments," the film would remain unavailable in India until further notice.
Apart from Diljit Dosanjh, the film also stars Arjun Rampal, Kanwaljit Singh, Suvinder Vicky and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan in key roles.
