A special POCSO court in Hyderabad on Tuesday sentenced a 23-year-old auto-rickshaw driver to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting an 11-year-old boy in 2019.
Special Sessions Judge G Uday Bhaskar Rao of the POCSO court pronounced the judgment against Abdul Rehman, a Secunderabad resident. The court fined the convict Rs 6,000 and awarded Rs 75,000 as compensation to the victim.
The case dates back to October 29, 2019, when the victim boarded Rehman's auto-rickshaw near Jalavihar to travel to Ranigunj.
Rehman allegedly diverted the route, stopped near Bathukamma Kunta, and forcibly took the boy into bushes adjacent to a railway track, where he sexually assaulted him.
When the boy resisted, Rehman allegedly smashed his head against a wall, causing him to bleed profusely. Hearing the victim's cries, passers-by rushed to the spot, apprehended Rehman and handed him over to the police.
Following a complaint by the victim's mother, a case was registered at Ramgopalpet Police Station under Sections 377 and 324 of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 5 and 6 of the POCSO Act.
The case was tried before the POCSO court, which convicted Rehman based on the evidence presented by the prosecution.
Rakshitha Krishna Murthy, DCP, Secunderabad zone, hailed the verdict and commended the "meticulous efforts" of the entire team that led to Rehman's conviction and sentencing.
