Sunny Deol's clean-shaven appearance at a fan screening of his upcoming film Ikka in Mumbai has sparked speculation online, with social media users linking the makeover to Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana, in which he is set to play Lord Hanuman. Deol has not responded to the claims, but the conversation around his new look has continued ahead of Ikka's Netflix release on July 10.
Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra, Ikka is a courtroom drama about the pull between professional duty and personal history. Deol plays Arjun Mehra, an upright and incorruptible defence lawyer whose principles are tested when he has to defend Shauryamann Gaur, played by Akshaye Khanna, a murder accused who is also his former professional rival. The case draws Mehra into a web of ethical compromises.
At the Mumbai screening, Deol was seen without the rugged beard he has worn in recent years, and the change quickly drew attention online. Several users said they believed the look was for Ramayana. One wrote, "He has shaved for his role as Lord Hanuman in Ramayana, and the new look suits him perfectly. Truly powerful and charismatic!" Another posted, "HANUMANJI MODE ON #SunnyDeol seen clean shave today at #ikka movie fan screening..."
Other comments followed in a similar vein. One user wrote, "He is soooooo soooooo dashing and handsome Hero I think fans will see sunny pajiii in this looks in films too he iss superb Auraa" Another said, "I think he is clean shaven for Ramayana shoot" A third wrote, "Looking so dashing in a clean-shaven look," while another repeated, "He has shaved for his role as Lord Hanuman in Ramayana, and the new look suits him perfectly."
Ramayana: Part 1, described by IMDb as "the most anticipated Indian film of this year", is based on the ancient Indian text Ramayana, one of the most important epics of Hinduism. The film is the first part of a planned two-part series, with Ranbir Kapoor cast as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as goddess Sita and Yash as Ravana.
The ensemble cast also includes Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, Arun Govil as Dasharatha, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari, Vivek Oberoi as Vidyutjiva, Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha, Sheeba Chaddha as Manthara, Indira Krishnan as Kausalya and Kunal Kapoor as Indra, among others. The music is being composed by AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer in their first collaboration on an Indian project.
Filming for Ramayana: Part 1 has wrapped, and the film is now in post-production, while the second part has entered pre-production and work on it is underway. Even so, the immediate focus online has remained on whether Deol's new appearance is tied to the mythological film.
Meanwhile, Ikka will begin streaming on Netflix on July 10. The film centres on the clash between personal history and professional responsibility as Mehra is forced to defend the very man with whom he shares a bitter past.
