A routine act of kindness turned costly for a Hyderabad resident after two men used a staged road accident as a distraction to steal his premium smartphone worth nearly 1 lakh in Saroornagar.
The incident took place in a residential area under the Saroornagar police limits, where the suspects allegedly executed a planned distraction theft by taking advantage of a passerby who stopped to help.
The CCTV footage from the locality showed two men arriving on a motorcycle without a visible registration number. In the footage, one of the men appears to intentionally lose balance and fall on the road, creating a scene that draws the attention of a nearby passerby.
The victim, assuming the rider needed assistance, approached the man and began helping him lift the motorcycle. While his attention was focused on the fallen rider, the second suspect moved closer and took the smartphone from the victim’s shirt pocket without being noticed.
Moments later, the two suspects escaped from the area on the same motorcycle before the victim realised that his phone was missing.

The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed in the locality, and the footage has since circulated on social media, drawing attention to the growing use of distraction-based methods by thieves.
Police have begun examining the footage to identify the suspects and are analysing their movements, including the route taken after the alleged theft. Authorities are also looking into whether the individuals could be connected to similar cases involving staged accidents or distraction tactics in other parts of Hyderabad.
The incident also prompted renewed warnings about being cautious in unfamiliar roadside situations, especially when multiple individuals are involved in creating a sudden disturbance.
While helping someone in distress is a natural reaction, such incidents highlight how criminals can exploit ordinary gestures of trust and empathy. Police officials have often advised people to remain aware of their belongings while assisting strangers, particularly in crowded or isolated areas.
The investigation into the Saroornagar theft is currently underway, with authorities relying on CCTV evidence to identify and apprehend the suspects.
