  • Imtiaz Ali wants to bring Radha-Krishna story to screen
  • He said it is more than a love story and has a deeper philosophy
  • The director said love appears naturally in his films and is not deliberately added

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali said that he wants to bring the story of Radha-Krishna to the screen. He expressed that it is not just a love story, but one with many layers and a deeper philosophy. The Main Vaapas Aaunga director, in a recent interview, also spoke about how love keeps returning to his films, even when he does not set out to make a conventional romance.

The 55-year-old director expressed that stories from Indian mythology have inspired him deeply and added that he feels he should be capable enough to make them.

In a chat with ABP Live, Imtiaz said, “There are many stories of Indian mythology that have inspired me a lot. I feel I should be capable enough to make those stories.”

When asked to narrow it down to one story, he said, “I have said this before as well. I want to make Radha-Krishna’s story.” When the interviewer pointed out that this too was a love story, Imtiaz laughed and said, “It’s not only a love story. There are many layers to their story. It has a deeper philosophy.”

Love in his films

Imtiaz said he does not deliberately add romance to everything he makes, but it finds its way into his films naturally. Speaking about the subject, he said, “I don’t want to add romance to everything, but it just happens naturally, so I don’t stop that.”

The director said he has never consciously made his films as love stories. Speaking about Love Aaj Kal, he said he had felt Aaj Kal would have been a better title and had even wondered whether it was a love story at all. He said his team explained why they saw it as a love story, while he saw it as an interpretation of love across different eras.

He added that he definitely did not make Jab We Met as a love story either, but said the theme keeps appearing in his films again and again.

His idea of love

Elaborating on the idea, Imtiaz said love is present in every story in some form. “I don’t think you can make a story without love. That love could be towards your nation, or for someone who has passed away, and someone is seeking revenge for them, but the story is always about love. You can show it differently,” he said.

He also said he is still trying to understand what love means and that he makes every film while trying to answer that question. With a laugh, he added that he is more confused than before.

Imtiaz Ali’s latest film, Main Vaapas Aaunga, is currently running in theatres. The film stars Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Sharvari and Vedang Raina in lead roles.

The film clashed with Haunted 3D and Bharat Bhhagya Viddhata among many others on the day of its release.
