Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja is heading to Hollywood, marking a first for Tamil cinema. The 2024 crime thriller is set to get an official Hollywood remake, with a Hollywood agency now working to set up the project with an A-list actor.

Producer Sudhan Sundaram confirmed the development in an interview with The Times of India, revealing that the makers were approached for the remake rights after the film’s strong run in China. The Hollywood agency is now trying to put the project together, with filming expected to begin next year.

The lead actor, however, remains a mystery for now. Social media has been buzzing with speculation that Matthew McConaughey could star in the remake, but there is no official confirmation. Sudhan said the agency will reveal details about the cast and studio once the project is finalised.

“Following the success of the film in China, where the film did very well both at the box office (Rs 91.65 crore, according to Sacnilk) and on OTT, we were approached by a Hollywood agency for the remake rights. They are now trying to set up the project with an A-list star. The film is likely to go on floors by next year,” Sudhan told The Times of India.

On the McConaughey speculation, the producer kept things open. “Maybe McConaughey is one of the stars they are talking to, but only the agency will be able to confirm,” he said.

That means the Hollywood version of Maharaja is still taking shape. But the remake itself is a significant development for Tamil cinema, particularly because the film has travelled far beyond its original audience. Its success in China appears to have helped bring it to the attention of Hollywood, where an agency is now working to give the story a new setting and audience.

Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, Maharaja follows a barber whose complaint about a missing dustbin takes him to a police station. What sounds like a bizarrely simple problem soon opens the door to a much darker story. The film gradually reveals its secrets through a series of twists, shifting perspectives and a revenge plot.

Vijay Sethupathi played the central character, while Anurag Kashyap took on the role of the antagonist. Sanchana Namidass played Vijay’s daughter and later won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance.

Released in 2024, Maharaja was praised for its screenplay, performances and tightly constructed narrative. Its journey continued in China, where it roughly earned Rs 91.65 crore at the box office and also found an audience on OTT.
