Nani, Srikanth Odela say edit hurt controversial Paradise scene's intended meaning

The “single shot actress” line in The Paradise was meant to carry more context than what eventually appeared on screen. Director Srikanth Odela and actor Nani have now addressed the controversial scene involving actor Kayadu Lohar’s character Subbalakshmi, which drew criticism for reducing her to the suggestive videos she makes in the film.

The scene, involving her (Subbu’s) mother, was played for laughs and was criticised as objectifying and out of step with the film’s larger themes. In a post-release conversation with actor Nani, Odela said the problem was that the emotional setup behind the line was lost during editing.

According to the director, Subbu’s mother isn’t meant to be dismissive of her daughter. The family is struggling to survive, her husband has left, and the videos are one of the few ways they can make money.

“There is no food at home. Nothing at all. The father has left. Those reels and cameras are the only things they have as a means of support,” Odela said.

He explained that Subbu had left home to pursue acting but returned without achieving what she had hoped for. Her mother never believed she could become a mainstream actress, and that disappointment shaped her attitude towards her daughter.

“The idea was that the mother is saying, ‘You ran away from home. Had you pursued acting properly, you could have been a great artiste.’ That is what I meant to convey through that scene. But it got communicated differently on screen. The setup just was not right in the movie,” he said.

Nani agreed that the scene worked better in the script than in the final cut. “The payoff of that scene looks really good on paper. The setup we had written was strong. But during the editing process, the connection between the setup and the payoff broke,” he said.

He also acknowledged that some of the criticism around Subbu’s track came from the same issue. “The specific things audiences are pointing out, we somehow missed during the editing. Setting up the scene the right way, giving the audience the proper context before the payoff arrives, that is where we fell short. I genuinely feel that,” Nani said.

In The Paradise, Kayadu Lohar plays Subbu, a young woman from a poor family who dreams of becoming an 'actress'. Unable to find legitimate work, she starts making suggestive videos and selling them, with her mother involved because the family needs the money.

It’s that context, Odela and Nani now say, that got lost between the script and the final film. The Paradise released in theatres on September 24. Despite substantial hype, the film received mixed reactions and critical response.
