Tukaram Mundhe, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration commissioner known for his tough crackdown on unhygienic restaurants and eateries, has been described as a “rock star” on the front page of The New York Times.

Mundhe, often dubbed “IAS Singham” for his strict enforcement of food safety rules, has become a celebrity of sorts in the country following a series of surprise inspections at restaurants, food shops, warehouses and quick-commerce dark stores. His actions have brought some of the state’s best-known food businesses under scrutiny and made him a familiar name among diners and restaurant owners.

The New York Times, meanwhile, featured Mundhe on its front page under the headline, “In India, a Food Inspector Is a Rock Star”, with the strap, “Diners revere him and owners fear him.”

In its web article, the NYT described him as “a food safety celebrity” and examined how his inspections have made him a public figure while putting food hygiene in the spotlight.

Mundhe was appointed Maharashtra FDA commissioner earlier this year. Since then, his department has carried out a series of inspections that resulted in temporary closures and licence suspensions at several establishments.

Outlets of Domino’s and Pizza Hut were also temporarily shut after inspections found cockroaches and expired products in their kitchens. Several of Mumbai’s legacy food businesses also faced brief licence suspensions following FDA inspections.

His department also raided dark stores operated by quick-commerce platforms Blinkit and Zepto, where inspections allegedly found food safety violations, including lizards, cockroaches and expired products.

The crackdown has turned Tukaram Mundhe into a prominent figure in Maharashtra’s food industry. While restaurant owners have faced action over violations, his strict approach has also earned him a following among diners concerned about hygiene and food safety.
