Peacock is developing a new TV series set in the Fast & Furious universe, with actor Vin Diesel announcing the project at the NBCUniversal upfront presentation in New York on Monday. Diesel appeared onstage with Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon and said the move to television had been driven by long-standing demand from fans.

Diesel said audiences had wanted more from the franchise for years, including more stories around its legacy characters. He said the expansion into television happened only when he felt the franchise’s core identity would be protected.

The actor also said Peacock was launching four shows from the Fast & Furious universe, though a person with knowledge of the matter later told Variety that only one show is currently set up at Peacock, while others are in different stages of development at Universal TV.

Diesel announces TV expansion

"For the last decade, we have realised that the fans have wanted more," Diesel said, adding, "They wanted us to expand the legacy characters, their stories. And for the last decade, the desire has been for us to enter the TV space that Fallon has mastered. And I had to wait till it was right..."

He continued, "It became right when Donna Langley started to oversee it all, because that’s when I knew that the integrity of the characters, the international appeal, what makes us all feel like family would be protected in the TV space... The news that I have here today is that Peacock is launching four shows from the ‘Fast and Furious’ universe."

Plot details of the series have not been disclosed. Diesel, however, said the show would honour the legacy of the films.

Creative team and production

According to Variety, Mike Daniels, whose credits include Sons of Anarchy, Shades of Blue and Rockford Files, and Wolfe Coleman of Shades of Blue will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. They are also writing the pilot.

Diesel will executive produce with Sam Vincent through One Race. Neal Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film are also attached as executive producers, along with Jeff Kirschenbaum and Chris Morgan. Universal Television will produce the series.

Franchise history

If the project moves ahead, it will not be the first Fast & Furious television series. Netflix earlier aired the animated show Fast & Furious Spy Racers, which ran for six seasons between 2019 and 2021.

The Fast & Furious franchise has released 11 films so far and has earned more than $7 billion worldwide. The first film, The Fast and the Furious, was released by Universal Pictures in 2001. It is set to be honoured with a midnight screening at the Cannes Film Festival on May 13 to mark its 25th anniversary. The saga is also set to conclude with Fast Forever, which Universal has confirmed for worldwide release on March 17, 2028.
