In Short

  • The custom gown used muted ivory and burgundy to frame archival florals
  • Its off-shoulder corset bodice featured embroidered motifs and sculpted waist detailing
  • The lower half softened into drapes that echoed a saree's fluid movement

Alia Bhatt closed another Cannes outing with a look steeped in old-world romance.

For a Cannes dinner appearance, the actor wore a custom creation by Tarun Tahiliani that leaned heavily into historical textile storytelling. The gown drew from archival chintz florals — a woodblock printed, painted, stained or glazed calico textile that originated in Golconda (present day Hyderabad, India) in the 15th century. The gown came in muted ivory and deep burgundy tones, the look felt like a meeting point between Victorian dressing and Indian couture codes.

The off-shoulder silhouette came with a structured corset bodice, embroidered floral motifs and sculpted detailing across the waistline. But unlike a traditionally rigid corseted gown, this one softened into a draped, almost saree-like fluidity towards the bottom.

Her hair was tied in a neat bun and this time she chose a chunky necklace and matching earrings to complete dewy, minimal look.

Interestingly, Alia’s Cannes wardrobe this year has followed a fairly consistent visual language. There has been a clear move towards softer palettes, restrained glamour and silhouettes rooted in nostalgia rather than excess.

Alia Bhatt had a Cinderella moment in the steel blue gown that brought in princess dressing, albeit in a more couture manner. Princess core!

Her Bharat Pavilion appearance in the vintage-inspired corset saree was deeply rooted in Indian craftsmanship, complete with traditional jewellery details.

Before that came the peach couture moment that embraced understated elegance, followed by the Riviera-inspired look that mirrored the old-money ease of the French coast.

This Tarun Tahiliani outing neatly tied those fashion moods together. It had the romanticism of vintage Europe, the structure of classic couture and the fluidity of Indian drape traditions, all without losing the quiet elegance that has defined Alia Bhatt’s Cannes run this year.
