- A social media post criticised the female objectification in Peddi
- The post accused the film of denying Janhvi Kapoor's Achiyyamma basic humanity
- Janhvi Kapoor also liked the post about disrespecting female characters
Since its premiere, the sports drama starring Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor has faced backlash for objectifying and mishandling its female lead. The controversy intensified after screenshots went viral showing Kapoor allegedly liking a social media post that called the film "the most expensive disrespect ever paid to a leading woman in Indian cinema." However, the "like" is currently not visible on the post, leaving her definitive stance unconfirmed.
The criticism has centred on the way Achiyamma is written and filmed, even as the film gives Ram a larger sociopolitical arc. The Instagram page Recommendation Community shared a post on Peddi with the title, "Peddi: the most expensive disrespect ever paid to a leading woman in Indian cinema (sic)."
The post criticised the 350 crore film for framing the denial of human identity as a systemic evil while denying Achiyamma the same humanity. It also said that Ram gets a sociopolitical crusade while Janhvi gets a midriff close-up.
A portion of the post read, "It is easy to blame an actress for the roles she takes, but the actual timeline tells a different story. Reports show that Janhvi Kapoor explicitly questioned these shots during post-production, a boundary that perfectly mirrors her recent public stance against the industry's habit of oversexualising women (sic)."
"She drew a professional line, but the final edit kept the footage anyway. This isn't a case of an actress failing to stand up for herself. It is a director choosing to ignore a boundary because he decided her consent mattered less than his box office numbers (sic)," the post concluded.
Kapoor did not comment on the post, but many users noticed that she had liked it and read that as agreement. “Liked by janhvi kapoor,” one person commented with crying emojis. Another wrote, “Wtf this post is liked by jahnvi kapoor. It is an insult to tfi.”
While there are viral screenshots of her like on the post, it is not visible anymore on the Instagram page.
The criticism has also focused on Peddi’s love track, which viewers said is devoid of consent. In the film, Peddi says he wants to touch Achiyamma without her consent because she would never agree to love him and her father would never agree to their marriage. He later kisses her without consent during a power cut. When Achiyamma cries, another male character asks her to forget it for the sake of her father’s political career.
Since the premiere, many social media users have said that what Peddi does to Achiyamma amounts to assault, particularly because another character is villainised for violating her in a different scene. The backlash around the film has therefore centred on both the treatment of its female lead and Kapoor’s apparent agreement with a post criticising how her character was portrayed in the final cut.
India Today, in its review of the film, wrote, "The film's biggest problem, however, is neither technical nor narrative. It is Janhvi Kapoor's character. The issue is not simply that the romantic track feels disconnected from the central story. The issue is how the character is conceived and presented. Nearly every scene featuring her seems designed around objectification rather than character development."
Peddi theatrically released on June 4, 2026.
