India and Punjab Kings pacer Arshdeep Singh has landed in fresh controversy after a Snapchat exchange with a fan triggered another round of backlash on social media. The left-arm fast bowler, who has already faced criticism this IPL season over remarks made in viral videos, is once again under scrutiny for his conduct online.
Arshdeep, widely regarded as one of the more popular young cricketers among fans because of his candid vlogs and dressing-room interactions, has endured a turbulent few weeks off the cricket field. The latest controversy erupted after screenshots of his response to a fan began circulating widely online.
The incident comes days after Arshdeep was criticised for remarks directed at Tilak Varma in a video recorded ahead of Punjab Kings’ IPL clash against Mumbai Indians. In the clip, Arshdeep panned the camera towards Tilak and said, “Oye Andhere, sunscreen lagaaya?” which roughly translates to, “Hey, dark one, did you apply sunscreen?”
The remark immediately drew criticism from fans online, many of whom accused the India pacer of making racist comments about Tilak Varma’s skin tone. The video spread rapidly across social media platforms, leading to widespread outrage.
In the same video, Arshdeep then pointed towards Mumbai Indians batter Naman Dhir and said in Punjabi, “Aa dekh, aa hai Punjab da asli noor, te aa hai nakli,” which translates to, “Look, this is the real glow of Punjab, and this is fake.”
The backlash intensified after a fan reacted to the controversy and urged Arshdeep to stop using Punjab’s name in the IPL, claiming that his actions were bringing embarrassment to Punjab Kings supporters.
Arshdeep’s reply on Snapchat left many users stunned.
“What have you done for Punjab, Singh saab? People who still ask family for chips and cold drink money are now advising me on Punjab?” Arshdeep wrote in response.
Screenshots of the exchange quickly went viral, with several users criticising the pacer for his tone and behaviour. Many fans questioned why a senior India international would engage in public arguments with supporters on social media while already facing criticism over previous incidents.
Former India spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan reacted strongly to the controversy and called for disciplinary action against Arshdeep Singh.
“Nobody believed me. Everyone mocked and trolled me. Arshdeep should be banned this season and should be paid on a pro rata basis. The players today should be hit where it hurts the most. I am sure I would be trolled again,” Sivaramakrishnan posted on X.
Sivaramakrishnan had recently alleged that he himself experienced racism during his playing days for India, which added further weight to his reaction to the viral videos involving Arshdeep.
This is not the only instance in recent weeks where the Punjab Kings pacer has faced criticism over comments linked to a fellow cricketer’s appearance. Another Snapchat video involving Gujarat Titans batter Sai Sudharsan also went viral on social media.
In the clip, Arshdeep can be heard recording a video while pointing the camera towards Sai Sudharsan before saying, “Wait, let me clean my camera lens, it can’t capture Sai.” He then added, “Your lips can’t be seen in the video.”
The repeated controversies have sparked a larger debate around player accountability and social media conduct during the IPL season. While neither Arshdeep Singh nor Punjab Kings have issued an official statement on the matter so far, criticism has continued to mount online, with several former cricketers and fans demanding stricter action from the authorities.
