Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup are gearing up for another big-screen adventure. Warner Bros. Pictures Animation has announced that a new Powerpuff Girls animated film is officially in development.
The announcement was made on Monday at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France. While the studio confirmed that work on the project is underway, sources said no deal has been finalised yet, and the film is yet to receive a formal green light. Plot details have also been kept under wraps.
Based on the beloved Cartoon Network series, The Powerpuff Girls follows three kindergarten-aged superheroes created by Professor Utonium using sugar, spice and everything nice – until an accidental dash of Chemical X gives them extraordinary powers. Together, Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup protect the fictional city of Townsville from villains and monsters.
The original series debuted in 1998 and ran for six seasons before concluding in 2005. The franchise also expanded to theatres with The Powerpuff Girls Movie in 2002, which earned $16 million worldwide against an estimated $11 million budget. A reboot followed in 2016, while a planned live-action adaptation was eventually shelved before release.
The new film is part of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation's growing theatrical slate. The studio's next release is The Cat in the Hat, scheduled to hit cinemas in November with Bill Hader voicing the iconic feline. Upcoming projects also include Bad Fairies, starring Cynthia Erivo, Margie Claus with Melissa McCarthy, and Oh, the Places You'll Go!, featuring Ariana Grande and Josh Gad.
