Winter is coming to cinemas with GOT Aegon's Conquest set for Summer 2029 release

Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest has been set for a June 2029 cinema release. The film takes Westeros to the big screen for the first time as the franchise expands beyond television.

Good news for GOT fans: The sprawling Game of Thrones universe is finally heading to the big screen. Warner Bros announced the first official movie, Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, is set for a June 6, 2029 theatrical release, bringing the world of Game of Thrones to cinemas for the first time.

The film will go back several centuries before the original series to tell the story of Aegon I Targaryen, the conqueror who united much of Westeros and established the dynasty that would rule the Seven Kingdoms for generations.

Directed by Owen Harris and written by Beau Willimon, the film will introduce audiences to a Targaryen ruler who has so far existed only in the history and legends of the franchise.

And there’s plenty of history to unpack.

Who is Aegon I Targaryen?

Aegon I was the first Targaryen king of Westeros and the man who began the conquest that would reshape the continent. Riding his dragon Balerion the Black Dread, Aegon set out with his sisters and wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, to bring the warring kingdoms under Targaryen rule.

The film is expected to centre on that conquest, although plot details remain tightly under wraps. There’s also no word yet on who will play Aegon.

His story sits at the very beginning of the Targaryen dynasty - the same family that eventually produced Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke, centuries later. It also means the new film is digging deeper into the history that has already powered HBO's House of the Dragon.

The Targaryen family has become one of the biggest threads in the expanding Game of Thrones universe. House of the Dragon explored the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has taken the story further down the timeline.

From Westeros on TV to the big screen

For Game of Thrones fans, Aegon’s Conquest marks a significant shift. The original series, based on George R.R. Martin’s bestselling fantasy novels, ran for eight seasons between 2011 and 2019 and became one of television’s biggest shows, winning multiple Emmy Awards along the way. Now, its world is being given a cinematic treatment.

Owen Harris comes to the project with plenty of experience inside the franchise. He is an executive producer on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and directed several episodes of its first season. His other credits include Black Mirror, the 2019 version of The Twilight Zone and Brave New World, starring Alden Ehrenreich.

Beau Willimon, meanwhile, is best known as the creator and showrunner of House of Cards. He also worked as a writer on Disney+’s Andor.

Meanwhile, fans won't have to wait until 2029 for their next trip to Westeros. House of the Dragon is set to return for its fourth season, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already been renewed for a second.
