  • Production on The Batman Part II paused due to director Matt Reeves' family matter
  • Filming was ongoing in London before the temporary halt
  • Release date remains February 18, 2028, but impact is uncertain

Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused as director Matt Reeves steps away to deal with a family matter. Warner Bros and DC Studios confirmed the development on Monday, adding another twist to a sequel that’s already had its release date pushed back several times.

Filming had been under way in London when production was put on hold. For now, the film is still scheduled to hit cinemas on February 18, 2028. Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that it’s too early to know if the latest pause will affect that date.

The studio said in a statement, “Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focusses on a family matter. Matt has the full support of DC Studios, and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”

Robert Pattinson will return as Batman, with Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell reprising their roles as Alfred and the Penguin. The sequel has also added a new set of faces, including Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham and Sebastian Koch.

Reeves’ first The Batman, released in March 2022, marked Pattinson’s first outing as the DC superhero. The sequel, however, has taken considerably longer to reach the screen.

It was initially set for October 2, 2026, before being pushed to October 1, 2027. In July this year, Warner Bros delayed it again, moving the release to February 2028.

At the time, DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn defended the longer wait, pointing out that major sequels often take years to arrive. He also said the film’s script wasn’t finished and that Reeves was committed to getting it right.

Now, with production paused for a personal reason, fans will have to wait a little longer for Gotham’s next chapter.
